I’ve wanted to go to Three Amigos for a while now, but given the mixed bag of reviews and the $$$ rating, I’ve put it off time and time again.
But today, I had a really bad craving for a margarita that drove me right into the restaurant’s arms. Within five minutes of my arrival, I had nachos and salsa in front of me.
And then the margarita came. Lime flavoured, of course. It was HUGE. But unfortunately, it looked better than it tasted. It seemed to be lacking in the alcohol department and ample in the sugar department.
But it was cold and frozen and big, so… hey!
At the waiter’s recommendation, my fellow diner and I decided on the Plato Mexicano 3 Amigos. A tasting platter which came with jalapeños, calamari, cheese quesadillas, flautas, cactus, guacamole and chipotle mayo.
I especially loved the jalapeño poppers and the cactus. It was nice to try a little bit of everything and it was all very tasty. Bit of a mouth teaser, if you ask me.
But it was really just in preparation for the main course which was… *drum role* pollo con mole poblano.
If you’ve never had it before, it’s chicken with spicy chocolate sauce. Now, before you raise your eyebrows at what you perceive to be the strangeness of it all, I suggest you at least try it out.
No, it isn’t sweet - chocolate isn’t in its raw form. And no it isn’t weird. If done well, its yummy.
And there it is. In its full human glory. Spicy, bitter-ish and just… unique, unique, unique.
It really hit a spot. Chocolate and chilli - my two favourite ingredients in a happy marriage in chicken mole.
All in all, I liked this restaurant. The food’s good, the portion is generous, the service is friendly and the prices are mid range.
Now, all they need to do is make their margaritas a tad stronger.
